Abstract	Die Geschichte obligatorischer Berufserziehung in Deutschland wird bisher vorwiegend als pädagogisches Folgeproblem der sogenannten "Sozialisationslücke zwischen Schule und Militär" historisch erforscht und bewertet. Der vorliegende Beitrag zeigt demgegenüber - auf der Grundlage von Archivstudien in der Gutehoffnungshütte Oberhausen und für die preußische Administration -, daß die Formierung von Ausbildung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts erstens an Vorgaben anknüpft, die von Staat und Betrieben schon im 19. Jahrhundert erbracht worden waren, zweitens, daß die im Prozeß der Industrialisierung ausgeformten betrieblichen Strukturen und ihre mentalen Komplemente - die ihnen entsprechenden Erwartungen - als historische Bedingungen für die Formalisierung von Ausbildung (als "Ausbildungsprotostrukturen") begriffen werden können, und daß drittens nicht primär Pädagogisierungsabsichten, sondern - als Ergebnis konflikthafter Auseinandersetzungen in der Administration - eher Qualifikationserwartungen die öffentliche Gestalt der Berufsbildung prägen; jedenfalls ist primär die funktionale Unterscheidung von Erziehung/Jugendhilfe und Fürsorge einerseits und von Qualifikation, Ausbildung und Berufskarrieren andererseits das historisch folgenreichste Ergebnis der Kontroversen um die Berufsbildung zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts. (DIPF/Orig.). Up to now, the history of compulsory vocational training in Prussia has, for the most part, been analyzed as an educational problem resulting from the so-called "socialization gap", that is, the period between leaving school and entering military service. Contrary to this point of view, the authors argue a) that the formation of vocational education at the beginning of the twentieth century continued a process which had already been initiated by the state and by individual factories in the nineteenth century; b) that the internal structure of the factory and its mental complement, i.e., the corresponding expectations which were shaped during the process of industrialization, can be regarded as historical conditions for the formalization of vocational education, in other words, as "protostructures of vocational training"; c) that, as a result of conflict within the state administration, the institutional form of vocational education was not primarily shaped by pedagogical intentions but rather by a demand for professional qualifications. The functional differentiation between education, youth Service, and welfare, on the one hand, and professional qualification, training, and vocational careers, on the other, can be considered the most consequential result of controversies concerning vocational education at the beginning of the twentieth century.
