Abstract[...] the aim of this chapter is to draw a more complete picture of social inequalities in secondary education in Germany by studying the effect of social origin in relation to all inflows and outflows from secondary schooling. The authors shall reconstruct secondary schooling careers step by step by studying (1) the first allocation to secondary education after primary schooling; (2) track changes, both downward and upward, before first graduation from secondary education; and (3) the upgrading of secondary school qualifications by attaining a higher degree after first graduation from secondary education. The analyses will combine high-quality and rich longitudinal data from the German National Educational Panel Study (NEPS) as well as the BiKS 8-14 study. In this chapter, the authors proceed as follows: First, they shall describe the German educational system, with a particular focus on secondary school differentiation. After presenting the data and methods, they introduce the results of the analyses and then conclude with a brief summary and discussion of our findings. (Orig.) . .
