Abstract | Danes immigrating to the US in the late 1880s and early 1900s brought with them their culture along with their folk schools and movement culture. This case study is an example of how Danish gymnastics and dance movement were disseminated via the folk school. The idea of adult education was implemented in the southern Appalachian region on the basis that education would improve the quality of Appalachian life while preserving the local traditions and everyday culture while sharing them with the rest of the world. A folk school was founded in the mountains of North Carolina and through the people employed and attending the school Danish gymnastics and folk dance were disseminated through various dance communities and institutions.
