Abstract | This contribution discusses the various enemy images conveyed by crusades narratives in French and German research literature and history textbooks. It addresses how the concept of a "non-European other"; emerged on the basis of long-standing traditions, and how this inspired highly varied enemy representations (dangerous, violent, weak, cowardly, culturally superior). Further, the comparison of textbooks and research literature reaches important insights, unveiling a clear dichotomy within enemy portrayals. |
