Abstract | "After the Second World War hundreds of thousands of children were born in Allied-occupied Germany to Allied soldiers and German mothers. Two phases can be distinguished in the history of these children: In the 1940s they were isolated in ghettoed facilities with the help of public welfare institutions. Their exclusion reflected the needs of a post-war society which did not wish to take responsibility for various reasons. At the beginning of the 1950s the children became the topic of public discourse in the West, while in the East, they served as test cases for the politically decreed German-Soviet friendship. It is argued that an both sides they can be associated with social opening-up processes." (author's abstract). |
