Abstract	"To inform the social policy debate in the European Union and to provide insights into the social situation in the Member States, the European Commission established a European Observatory on the Social Situation. One of the dimensions that this Observatory covers is demography and to assist the Commission a Demography Network was created. The general task of this Network is to monitor demographic trends and the demographic situation, as well as population-related socio-economic developments and to analyse the policy implications of these trends in the 25 Member States of the European Union. To the extent possible, also the Candidate Countries and Turkey should be included in this monitoring. The Demography Network is led by the Netherlands Interdisciplinary Demographic Institute (NIDI) and further consists of the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS, Belgium), the Centre for Social and Economic Research (CASE, Poland), the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW, Germany) and the Institute for Advanced Studies (IHS, Austria). In addition to these research institutes, a group of national experts contributes to the Demography Network. The present report (Demography Monitor 2005) reviews the demographic situation and related socio-economic developments in the European Union. The report particularly focuses on three broad and partly related dimensions of the social situation: employment, education and social protection." Die Untersuchung enthält quantitative Daten.
