Sometimes, there is a common structure between findings that have apparently nothing to do with each other. In this case, one issue can be modelled through another one. In his article, the author describes the possibility to model the moments of records through reflections on the permutations of the numbers 1,2,..., n. Then, you can determine how much records can be expected in n competitions. It is also investigated whether or not the conclusions drawn from the model calculations are compatible with real record data from the sports area. Besides the expected value, the author also investigates the variance and distribution of the record number; additionally, he looks into the question why the number of records, for increasing n, is asymptotically normal distributed. All of these problems are not new, but they are worked up here with regard to a possible treatment in school lessons. |
