Abstract | Educational Change has been high on the international agenda for the last twenty-five years. This... book provides a systematic overview and critique of contemporary approaches to educational change from some of the leading writers and scholars in the field. It offers critical perspectives on its flux and flows, its dominant patterns, its inherent tensions, contradictions and dilemmas. The authors question the extent to which research in the field has become increasingly ideologically driven and controlled rather than informed by more broadly based concerns for equity and social justice. They call for policies that seek genuine educational 'reforms' rather than those that perpetuate increasing inequalities in a globalised world. The book is divided into four sections which address key questions: 1. What has been the impact of educational change? 2. How has the impact differed in different circumstances? 3. What are the new directions for research on policy and practice? 4. How can we link research, policy and practice? By highlighting critical lessons from the past 25 years, the book aims to set an agenda for policy-related research and the future trajectories of educational reforms, while also taking into account the dominant rhetorics of international 'social movements' and the 'refracted' nature of policy agenda at national and local levels.
