Abstract | This article is an edited version of the speech delivered by the author to the Bologna Ministerial Conference in London on 17 May 2007. The article reviews the trends sweeping higher education, describes briefly the current state of play in European higher education, and places this in the context of the social trends that technology has unleashed. These social trends are not only changing the way in which the world does business but indeed changing the way in which universities will have to discharge their main functions. The article ends with suggestions of some areas for policy intervention - as well as areas for universities themselves to focus on - in the ongoing implementation of the European Higher Education Area.
