Abstract | The paper reports on a research project on the age factor in the acquisition of German as a Second Language. The project aims to identify and study exceptional learners of German who, despite a late start in the acquisition of German, achieve an extremely high or even native-like competence in a variety of language skills. In this context, the development of a time-constrained version of the C-Test is described in some detail. In this new variant of the C-Test procedure, an individual time limit is set for each C-Test test so that even competent native speakers are as a rule unable to complete the text. It is shown that this leads to a considerable increase in the discriminatory power and reliability of the C-Test so that the time-constrained version can be used to discriminate even among native-speakers.
