Abstract | The change of the official pedagogical norm for EFL learners in some German secondary schools from Received Pronunciation (RP) to Received Pronunciation Modified Standard is an attempt to account for recent and ongoing phonetic and attitudinal changes at the interface of Received Pronunciation and non-standard British English. In the first part of the paper, these changes are described and situated within their socio-historical context. The overview also includes a section on modern trends within RP. Following this, the implication of these changes for teaching British English to non-native speakers of the language is discussed. These considerations include an assessment of the new concept of 'Received Pronunciation Modified Standard' as an EFL target variety and a number of practical guidelines for future and current teachers of English.
