Abstract | The education-employment relationship and the transition from school to work has been the subject of substantial research over the last decade. This is mainly because of its priority in policy making for a number of reasons. One of the main policy research questions remains whether there is one or a number of different and equally effective solutions to these problems in different EU countries. The nature of the problem varies across countries; countries have different youth-age profiles, somewhat different economies, and clearly different institutional systems. In these circumstances comparative cross- country research is of particular interest to learn to what extent and why some policies appear to be generalisable, while others appear to be effective only in particular country/ institutional contexts.
