Abstract | There is much research on adjustment and identity of international students "that focuses on the various problems associated with movement into a foreign culture. But the links between time spent studying abroad and the implications for students during that time as well as once the sojourn is over have not been sufficiently explored" and most of the research focuses on Asian students. "This article looks closely at the lives of European exchange students and ameliorates the problems that they experience while studying in a small city in the southern United States." Instead of the concept "culture shock" the author uses "liminality" to describe the phase during which the students "come to terms with their host cultural surroundings" and find "stumbling blocks" that impede their ability to interact successfully with their new social milieu. A qualitative, ethnographic study (participatory observation, in-depth interviews) was used to detect the diverse stumbling blocks. (DIPF/Bi.) |
