Abstract | Needs and demands for change in the system of student selection applied by traditional universities are analyzed in this paper scrutinizing both the basis and goals of the system and asking about its coherence and linkages with secondary education. The relationships between the system selection variables and those having a proven impact on student performance in university education are then examined. The text is organized in five sections. In the first one the most salient features of the current selection system are identified with a view to specify its pros and cons. In the next section the meaning of the articulation between secondary education and the selection system is analyzed. Then the relation between the selection system and the entrance into university is examined. The fourth section is of revision of students' performance prediction after admission in the university, and in the final section there is an overall discussion of the selection process.
