Abstract	The comparative analysis which is presented in this paper attempts to characterise the educational context and features of dual qualifications (not to be confused with the "dual" system of education and training in Germany) and to reveal the particular relationship, between vocational and general education, which exists in the schemes under investigation. All schemes discussed are part of the upper secondary level of education. They may be distinguished as follows: schemes which extend over an integral part of the whole educational sector such as the vocational programmes or streams within the comprehensive school systems of Norway and Sweden; schemes which refer to individual courses or qualifications, e. g. in France, England, the Netherlands and Austria; schemes which represent pilot projects within the established systems of vocational education and training as in Bavaria and Brandenburg in Germany. The schemes are characterised not only by their different national contexts, but also in that they reflect a change in the approach to the combination of the general and vocational elements of education.
