AbstractThe aim of the article is to redefine the logical-semantic notion of concessivity and to distinguish it from contiguous notions such as adversativity and causality. Section 1 discusses the most important characteristics of concessivity mentioned in the literature: admission, contrast, obstacle, unexpected disappointment, deviation from a rule, and negation of a causal relation. Section 2 proposes a new definition of concessivity as "hidden causality". It is argued that concessivity involves two causal relations: a negated, ineffective relation and an affirmed, effective relation. In a prototypical example such as Although she is ill, she goes to work, the two relations can be paraphrased in the following two ways: A: Since she is ill, she doesn't go to work. B: Since she has an important meeting [or, depending on the context, some other reason], she goes to work. The concessive construction is based on a regular causal relation ( B); the effective cause, however, is not explicitly mentioned (here: important meeting). Concessivity is synonymous to causality from a referential point of view, but differs from the "argumentative strategy" adopted: concessive constructions are indirect and uncooperative. In section 3 some non-prototypical usages of concessivity are analysed and traced back to the general scheme of concessivity. (Verlag).
