Abstract | The critical review of the literature presented here considers three major models for conceptualizing reading and writing difficulties: (1) empirical models wich are largely atheoretical; (2) developmental models of dyslexia which distinguish among several subcategories or types of dysfunctions in children; (3) cognitive-oriented developmental models of reading and literacy which rely on the notion of associated structures to explain skill acquisition and dysfunction in these domains. The pertinence of these models is discussed and illustrated in a series of brief clinical case studies of children confronted with dyslexic and spelling difficulties. (Verlag). |
