| Abstract | In a longitudinal study, (the authors) examine changes in teachers' and students' accounts of life in school. Their study illustrates that despite some dramatic social changes over the past 25 years which have affected students' and teachers' lives outside school, patterns of classroom interaction and the way in which teachers and students spend their time in school have remained quite stable. National curriculum initiatives and substantial in-service training programmes aimed to develop more collaborative work, active learning, and preparation for life and work in modern society appear to have had little impact. The authors speculate that one of the main reasons for this inertia is that teachers' practices are tightly constrained by organisational factors, and that the promotion of educational change requires more long-term planning, organisational development and support from others beyond the school.
