| Abstract | The Education (Schools) Act 1992 instituted a regime of systematic inspections of all state schools on a four yearly cycle. Inspections were to be carried out according to a framework produced by a newly formed Office for Standards in Education (OFSTED). ... The results of research on the effects of OFSTED secondary school inspections in England since 1994 are presented. [The four surveys from 1993 and 1994 are compared] The reactions of headteachers to the inspections and their progress on the resulting school action plan are given.
