Abstract | This chapter is an analytic review of literature on the curriculum as a contention between two power blocks of knowledge systems: Western science, and IKS. It presents a road map showing the interface between the two knowledge systems that resulted in the silencing and the subsequent subjugation of the voices of IKS, and the implanting of a monopolistic, dominant Western science knowledge system, through curricula whose values are embedded in Western culture. Thus, it examines the silent struggle between Western culture and indigenous culture, resulting in the near annihilation of the latter. The review also examines attempts that have been made at integrating the two knowledge systems through a funnel-shaped lens that starts from a global perspective, through to Africa, tapering down to the Zimbabwean agriculture curriculum context. This analysis has been largely influenced by the conceptual framework proposed by Ndlovu (2018), as outlined in Figure 6.1, that perceives the ultimate goal of this study as the integration of IKS and the Western science knowledge, and the establishment of an IKS-SCIE agricultural curriculum. |
