AbstractIt has been a research concern for several decades now why some students tend to cut their studies short. Especially, students at the beginning of this new endeavor have the tendencies to be at risk. One of the reasons for that is the level of social integration. How well students are integrated can be especially beneficial when it comes to receiving support in difficult times. However, to integrate students socially is especially difficult considering the fact that in popular study majors, students are being taught in larger learning envi- ronments. Here students do not only have the tendency to be anonymous but also lack interaction. Even though, common teaching techniques, such as group work, are a possible solution for connecting students, it is still difficult to evaluate its success and identify students who are not participating, when being confronted with larger sized classes. For this reason, this thesis tries to enhance group work with technology in order to be able to promote and assess social integration even in larger learning environments. The undertaken approach, to achieve this goal, is to first analyze the classroom and identify where the lack of interaction is actually located. After that, an artifact is being created, in the form of a mobile application, which is validated over several semesters according to the functionality that needs to be present in order to achieve group work. This functionality consists of connecting students, noti- fying them, letting them work together in a group, and finally analyzing their interactions. All of these steps, as well as the benefits and shortcomings of this research, are discussed throughout this work. (Orig.).
