| Abstract | Numerous teachers immigrate to Germany. This group offers considerable potential for the internationalization of education and the "intercultural opening" of schools. Since teacher training in Germany differs significantly from the teacher training abroad, immigrant teachers' paths toward the accreditation of their professional qualifications, and their subsequent integration into the labor market, is often very difficult. Meeting the requirements of the accreditation process, as outlined by the Professional Qualification Assessment Act, is fraught with obstacles. This is why only a small proportion of immigrant teachers obtain accreditation and, even then, usually an additional adaptation course or further evidence of their qualifications is required. The German educators' union, the GEW, investigated some of the the reasons why the accreditation process is so problematic by systematically recording its expertise on this topic in the federal states and evaluating it with the aim of identifying best practice examples. The conditions of employment for immigrant teachers are also taken into account. (DIPF/Orig.). |
