| Abstract | Although existing research highlights the significant and positive impact that Black teachers in the United States have on both the academic and social and emotional outcomes of their Black students, there has been a persistent and high rate of turnover for Black teachers and Black men teachers, specifically. This chapter analyzes the factors that contribute to the higher turnover rates for Black teachers when compared to teachers of other ethnoracial groups. Additionally, this chapter begins with a historical overview of conditions that lead Black teachers to leave the classroom, dating back to the U.S. Supreme Court Brown v. Board of Education. Next, the chapter examines the proven benefits Black students experience when taught by Black teachers. The chapter concludes with policy recommendations for recruiting and retaining ethnoracial minority teachers in international settings based on lessons from the U.S. context. (DIPF/Orig.). |
