Abstract | The article relates two current debates to each other. First, the pedagogical action of teachers has been discussed in educational science under the heading of "professionalism" for some time now. Second, in connection with the establishment of Islamic religious education in Germany, a debate has emerged about the extent to which its pedagogy can and should be Islamic. These debates are linked to each other by a discussion of considerations regarding the pedagogical action of teachers set out in Ibn Khaldun's "Muqaddimah". From the perspective of professionalisation theory, these considerations are remarkable because Ibn Khaldun sees pedagogy as a profession practised in society based on the division of labour in return for payment. Moreover, he assumes that this should be done on a scientific basis. It is also noteworthy that, as in the more developed structural-theoretical variant of professionalisation theory, a distinction is made between two dimensions of pedagogical action or teaching - the didactic and the educational - both of which are considered to be in a tense relationship with each other. However, it also becomes apparent that there are limits to the development of professionalism, which is why the term "blocked" professionalism can be used with reference to Ibn Khaldun. |
