| Abstract | 'A'isa bt. Abi Bakr, umm al-mu'minin, stylised in Sunni Islam as the favourite wife of the Prophet Muhammad, is often represented as an (if not the) ideal Muslim woman. But how do biographical texts construct her authority? Is it possible to locate specific fields of authority that are ascribed to 'A'isha? Which role do these constructions play in giving an overall impression of her person? To examine these questions, this work primarily focuses on 'A'isha's biography in Ibn Sa'ds "Kitab at-Tabaqat al-kabir" and examines it with a specifically designed model dealing with the genesis of her authority. As a result, we see that the majority of the biographical reports on 'A'isha in the "Kitab at-Tabaqat" are of an authority-founding character, which is mainly derived from her relationship to the Prophet and far less as a result of her inherent knowledge and abilities. In this way, Ibn Sa'd aimed to create a picture of the pious, favourite wife of Muhammad through her status by marriage and her exemplary behaviour in religious affairs. |
