Abstract | It is increasingly evident that development priorities such as peace, poverty, health, environmental and educational governance as outlined in the SDGs are no longer confined to one nation but transcend local and national boundaries with transversal and cross-cutting issues necessitating the need for partnerships to address these. This chapter will focus on the latest global strategic and policy trends and will address ten specific tendencies that impact on the role of players in the Sport, Development and Peace (SDP) field. Some of these trends include challenges with regard to coordination and leadership in the SPD field, cooperative and corporate governance and policy priorities, emerging issues concerning sport integrity, the role of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Quality Physical Education (QPE), North-South relationships and results-based monitoring and evaluation. Sport and development have become major items on the policy agenda of multilateral organizations, governments, corporates as well as NGOs. The chapter contends that the governance of sport as well as sport and development policy and practice can much improve. Equally, the interfaces between competitive and high-performance sport, as well as development programs aimed at increased activity of all citizens and focusing on socioeconomic benefits of sport and recreation, should be seen as symbiotic interfaces which are becoming major priorities in the development effort. The chapter concludes that an emphasis on partnerships and cooperative governance is necessary to address developmental priorities in sport and sport & development. (Autor). |
