Abstract | Recent concern with diversity and inclusion has led researchers to examine the area in earnest; some researchers have looked at effective Black educators, and some have looked at student engagement in classrooms and gymnasiums. No matter the focus there is a sense of urgency as many Black students continue to fall into the achievement gap via disengagement, marginalization and a disconnection from their school. The following review of current and past findings is an attempt to address this disengagement through simple and complex questioning that may inductively point towards possible responses. Using an iterative aproach the author finds a voice through the research of others and hopes to provide an emancipatory theoretical perspective for teachers and students. Findings provoke the reader to confront Black education rooted in culture-specific action that is both simplistic and possible in any classroom, gymnasium, school district and/or community.
