Abstract | Doctoral thesis (submitted march, 2021): Police training is training for deployment and as such a globally encountered facility within police education. It intends to equip police officers with skills needed for frontline policing, especially for the coping with conflict and violence. Thus, police training, and police self-defence training in particular, is a pedagogical endeavor: Trainers teach and learners learn in there. Despite this fact, neither police training itself nor contemporary challenges of policing (e.g. the coping with violence) have been seriously recognised as to being of pedagogical relevance yet. In response to this "blindness on the eye of pedagogy" in police practice and research, the cumulative thesis sheds light on the role of pedagogy for contemporary demands at the interface of deployment and training. To this end, the paradigm of nonlinear pedagogy currently applied in the sports domain is presented. Even less than pedagogy, nonlinear pedagogy has so far received the attention of police education and related research. On a theoretical level, the underlying principles as well as resulting concepts and possible applications of nonlinear pedagogy are presented and reflected through the lenses of a model of professional coaching. On an empirical level, the effect of nonlinear and linear police training on knife defence performance has been investigated. As research on police training, the thesis contributes to the academic debate on its further professionalisation. As research for police training, it aims to show what practical implications a nonlinear approach to police training entails. (Autor). |
