| Abstract | The contribution argues for a strengthened awareness of the newly established paradigm of Applied Cognitive Linguistics, especially in connection with the teaching of English in German schools. Basic assumptions from Cognitive Linguistics seem to offer a fruitful way of explaining language phenomena even to beginning learners in order to raise their awareness for the foreign culture and for the foreign language as well as for language in general. As an example, two phenomena that appear early in English language learning and teaching, namely the distinction between count and mass nouns as well as the progressive aspect are analysed. This analysis starts with an overview of how these phenomena are treated in one of the current English language courses (Klett's "Orange Line"), how they are discussed in Cognitive Linguistic theory and how they may be applied to the English classroom. From an Applied Cognitive Linguistic perspective, these two phenomena seem to be in close connection to each other, whereas they are completely separated in traditional English teaching. Showing up their connection offers the possibility of raising the learners' awareness and of helping them to establish their own mental networks of meaning. (Verlag, adapt.). |
