Abstract | The article reports on the first results of on-going research in a French writing course for students of 'French as a second language' at the University of Victoria, Canada. The author and others are looking at the effects that an on-line writing component has on student learning, based on principles from cognitive and socio-constructivist theories. In particular, they are interested in seeing whether this add-on activity promotes student-centered learning, where learners are engaged actively in their learning process, to engage their cognitive and meta-cognitive skills. In addition using analysis of students' surveys, they try to define aspects of the learning tool that students perceive as either useful for their learning or that they wish to see improved or further developed.
