AbstractPrevious research on second language acquisition with multimedia has suggested that individual differences, including working memory capacity, play an important role in L2 vocabulary acquisition and reading comprehension. In the paper, the authors report on a study of 13 students in a second-year German language course who read a German short story on a multimedia CD-ROM. They had access to multimedia annotations of difficult vocabulary words, and their actions were tracked while they looked up words and completed a vocabulary test and comprehension exercises. In order to assess their working memory capacity, they completed a nonword repetition test and a reading span test. Analyses suggest a relationship between phonological working memory (nonword repetition test) and the number of look-ups, with those individuals with lower verbal WM capacity looking up more words. These results suggest that students use the multimedia look-up features of the CD-ROM to compensate for working memory capacity constrains. To showcase the new multimedia capabilities of System, the authors created screen capture movies that give readers a taste of the experimental treatment (CyberBuch) and the working memory tests (reading span, nonword repetition) administered in the study.
