| Abstract | The paper is intended to provide a few facts about the influence of the English language on German, facts that are meant to permit an objective and scientific view of the issue of foreign words. It is argued that anglicisms in German are a normal phenomenon of language contact, an important potential for semantic differentiation and therefore an enrichment of the German lexicon. The author stresses that mutual influence is nothing new in the history of German and that he does not foresee any danger for German through the import of foreign words even though the quantitative relations may at present be imbalanced. He argues that English foreign words are probably just a matter of fashion, reflecting the political and economic, cultural and social situation in the ensemble of languages. He finds it much more alarming that German is losing its function as a medium of information and communication in specific sciences but believes that the European Union with its policy of two foreign languages for all citizens starting in 2005 may be able to help preserve the linguistic diversity of Europe.
