Abstract | Van Rooy & Butler state in a recent article (2000) that, because Outcomes Based Education (OBE) requires that language teaching make visible the results of learning, we need to re-examine our conception of grammar and its role in the classroom. They argue that functional rather than formal grammar can provide the tools we need for practical, skills-based language teaching. The article takes up their suggestion that 'more detail' will make the model clearer for lecturers and course designers and offers some detail from Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG, associated with M.A.K. Halliday). The chosen detail is 'method of development' in texts, based on the concept of Theme. Revealing the underlying patterns of a text in this way can elucidate some basic principles of coherent paragraph structuring. (Verlag). |
