AbstractThis thesis explores the degree to which people's perceptions of their own and others' social status are automatic, accurate, and sensitive to context. In study 1, consistent with the depiction of status as an omnipresent force in social interaction, the mere presence of others activated mental representations of status (measured by the number of status-related words generated in a word-fragment completion task). In studies 2 and 3, individuals viewed 90 seconds of videotape showing fraternity members interacting in a naturalistic setting. Their status judgments of targeted individuals in the clips closely approximated these individuals' actual status, suggesting that people are able to accurately judge strangers' status on the bases of thin slices of behavior. Moreover, they were better judges of status than of generosity, intelligence, and other social dimensions. In study 4, members of established groups reported their perceptions of their own status in the group. These evaluations were compared to their actual status as reported by other group members. There was a tendency, most pronounced among lower status individuals, for individuals to overestimate their own status. This tendency was related to the degree to which participants defined status in terms of the traits and qualities they themselves possessed. More generally, individuals' perceptions of their status, independent of actual status, were related to a number of variables including liking for the group, accuracy in assessments of others' status levels, and perceived stability of the status hierarchy. Finally, study 5 demonstrated that the determinants of status vary as a function of the context in which status judgments are rendered. Consistent with prior research, targets showing anger were judged to be higher status in the context of a negotiation task. In the context of a problem-solving task, however, targets showing sadness were judged to be higher status than angry targets. Thus, whereas anger may communicate status in many situations, the status-enhancing value of emotional displays must be considered in the context in which they occur. The thesis concludes with a discussion of the value of studying not only actual status, but perceived status, as a factor in people's experiences of social interactions. (DIPF/Verlag).
