Abstract	Athletes' mental health plays a key role in determining their overall well-being and can be a central component in optimizing their sport performance. This chapter considers how sport psychology has been defined and, by extension, current views on who is a sport psychologist. It highlights current definitional perspectives on the profession and how a clear definition can serve as a foundation on which professional training and educational curricula can be built. The chapter then discusses professional training, which is the foundation for developing competent practitioners. It suggests that a specific graduate education model may be best suited for training future sport psychology professionals. The chapter also highlights the necessity of taking a competency-based approach to training across the professional lifespan and the current status of accrediting graduate training programs in the field. Finally, it discusses the qualifications and limitations of practice by focusing on the current state of professional credentialing. (Autor).
