Abstract | In this chapter, Furrer explores how history teaching can be affected by and can actually make use of the tendency to conceptualise the past via visual thinking, especially in regards to the Cold War, a period with which one particularly associates certain historical images. Furrer analyses Swiss textbooks aimed at students in secondary levels in order to understand how the authors of history textbooks currently use historical images and to what extent they are aware of the potency of the visual image in teaching, as well as its drawbacks. The Cold War, he argues, provides a unique challenge for the teacher, but images can be extremely useful to them, especially when they encourage their students to deconstruct these images. |
