Abstract | Dominant individualised social work methods and practices are being criticised in a growing body of Greek literature, as is the case in many other countries also experiencing the effects of neo-liberal policies and austerity. Among the same criticism, more progressive approaches and collective practices drawn from community work are being proposed as more appropriate to the complexity and length of the current challenges and problems. The article examines a number of critical obstacles related to the marginal position of community work within the social work curriculum and social work practice in Greece and the particular characteristics of Greek society. It is argued that in a discussion about social work's responses to neo-liberalism and austerity we should frame our answers with reference to the political, social and cultural particularities of the specific context rather than idealised notions of community work. In the case of Greece, a critical starting point would be to focus on building a culture of critical thinking and action. |
