Conceptualising media as co-operative practice, this contribution addresses the smartphone as a mediator of elementary experiences in early childhood. Beginning with an examination of empirical examples of children's earliest virtual encounters with themselves and others in familial interactions, the wide array of situated meanings that smartphones can mediate in relation to the self, to others, and to the world is revealed, and shown to be part of early socialisation and education processes. The contribution proposes that future investigation should not study the smartphone as a symptom of an increasing technologization of childhood, but should instead take account of and further delineate what specifically characterizes the smartphone as an a-technical medium that facilitates digital and virtual worldmaking. |
