Abstract | Growing access to smartphones, and the popularity of augmented reality (AR) games such as Pokémon Go, has helped fuel a growing interest in AR within the field of ELT. However, it is important to separate the hype surrounding an emergent technology from its proven educational benefits. There is a body of research spanning several decades into the use of AR in a number of disciplines, including the sciences (e.g. engineering, physics, astronomy, aeronautics, and medicine), the natural sciences, art, design, and, more recently, ELT. This article aims to review some of this research, and to draw conclusions as to the viability and applicability of AR in English language learning and teaching. (Verlag). |
