This study analyses the relationship between the students' motivation for the selection of a study program and his/her goal orientation. As might be expected, there is a significantly positive relation between the pedagogical interest as an intrinsic facet of the selection of a study program and the mastery goal orientation. Extrinsic motivation for the selection of a study program is related to performance goal orientation and the endeavor to avoid work. Conclusions for the advice of prospective or bachelor students are given based on the results of the study. It seems to be particularly important to examine first how realistic students' notions of how difficult their chosen degree and how useful their later profession might be and then influence them if necessary. The reason for this is that both facets of motivation for the selection of study program are connected to performance goal orientation and a tendency to avoid work, which both are unfavorable for learning.
