Abstract | The last two decades witnessed an unprecedented increase in morbidities associated with sedentary lifestyles.. Concomitantly, children are increasingly sedentary, and opportunities for physical activity during the school day are being diminished. Given these unfortunate trends, it is essential to delineate the health benefits resulting from cardiorespiratory fitness and physical activity (PA) during development. One area gaining attention is the relation of fitness and PA to neurocognitive health and development. Research reveals that increased cardiorespiratory fitness and PA are associated with improved cognitive health across the lifespan. With regard to children, fitness and PA are positively associated with the structural and functional integrity of the brain areas and networks supporting cognitive development, including the acquisition and maintenance of higher-cognitive functions.
