Abstract | Section 6: youth sport, physical activity and health The authors report on survey data from a large-scale cross-European cross-sectional study - known as the ENERGY study - conducted with 10-12- year-olds in Norway, the Netherlands, Belgium, Spain, Greece, Hungary, Slovenia and Switzerland. The study revealed notable differences in the amount of physical activity and sedentary behaviour reported by young people, but on the whole physical activity levels were described as 'alarmingly low' and sedentary activities such as TV viewing and computer-time were considerably common across the sample of European nations. Although schools were identified as critical sites of youth health promotion, the authors also noted that while schools in four countries (Belgium, Greece, Hungary and the Netherlands) provided young people with between two to three hours of PE per week and an average of forty to seventy minutes of break time (recess) per day, the majority of school children in the sample failed to meet the recommended daily guideline of engaging in thirty minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity.
