Abstract	In the period just before the First World War as well as in the following interwar period, when the pioneering era of industrialisation was over, most members of the middle class attached great importance to a college education. In this era in Hungary the access of Jews to university was legally limited by what was known as the numerus clausus. Thus, for those of the Jewish middle class who could not become lawyers, doctors or engineers, success in sport offered a way to pre-eminence. This is another possible explanation for the background of or motivation for outstanding Jewish sporting successes. The only Jewish sports club in Hungary, the VAC, was founded in 1906. It was the first Jewish sports club in Europe which did not cater entirely for gymnastics. With the introduction of the Anti-Jewish laws in Hungary between the two world wars the VAC, too, faced an impossible situation. By the time the club was banned, it had not been functioning properly for some years. Many of the members, competitors and officials of the club became the victims of the war. Zusammenfassung.
