Abstract | Bildung is one of the most central as well as controversial concepts in (German/continental) educational and cultural discourse. It functions as a particularly modern paradigm that implies a certain relationship between the individual and itself, others and the world, and a certain idea about the dynamics of this relationship which differ strongly from Greek-antique paideia and Christian-medieval imitatio. After a historical and semantic clarification, the space of experience and thought that is opened up by Bildung is sketched as the use of the concept in present discourse. Finally the (anthropogical) space opened by Bildung is questioned. (Verlag). |
