Abstract | Heterogeneity has become a buzzword during the last decade. In particular teacher educators seem to struggle with the demand of conceptualizing courses which support teachers in dealing successfully with increasingly heterogeneous demands in their classrooms. As very little has been published on how in-service teacher training could be conceptualized, this contribution focuses on the question of how in-service teacher training courses could be designed which aim at dealing with heterogeneity in the classroom. In order to illustrate concrete suggestions, the teaching of mathematics will be used as an example. Thus, the present contribution analyses theoretically concepts of differentiation for the teaching of mathematics and how these can be integrated into the development of an in-service teacher training course.
