Abstract | Gender bias in physical education (PE) class could be countered through purposeful instruction. Teacher instruction favors several value orientations and these orientations, if not identified, may perpetuate gender bias. The Activity Theory can provide a lens to ex amine how gender bias affects teachers' value orientations and could help eradicate gender bias in the gymnasium. Proposed relationships between systems of the Activity Theory and specific teachers' value orientations are presented and include: a) the subject of the activity, as it relates to the disciplinary mastery orientation, b) the object of the activity, as it relates to the learning process and self-actualization orientations, and c) the tools of the activity, where social responsibility and ecological integration orientations will lead to equity in the gymnasium. Using these systems, teachers could become aware of how their orientations are influenced by the socio-cultural and historical trends of gender and how these trends may affect instruction. (Autor). |
