How are German universities led these days? Based on interviews with rectors and presidents, the article provides an - at least partial - answer to this question. It argues that there is a structural homology between the organisational structure of the university and the structure of the president's job position. This is backed by the idea that universities are "multiple hybrid organisations" - shaped by typical internal contradictions having evolved historically - and that these contradictions are reflected by the formal and informal structure of the presidents' positions. In order to examine this argument, the article analyses self-descriptions of university leaders with regard to different aspects of a president's role (understanding of tasks, beneficial personal features of incumbents, motivation to run for office, and different role models).
