| Abstract | This article starts from the political debate about the language needs of refugees that arrived in Europe in 2015 in unexpected numbers. In the first chapters, it points out the rather high expectations for the desired language competence of these newcomers with varied educational backgrounds and summerizes the development of migration to Germany from the mid fifties with respect to language demands and provisions by the state. It looks closely at the required language levels according to the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) of the Council of Europe. Chapter 4 looks beyond the question "how much German migrants need" to "what kind of German language" do they have to learn and how are these requirements taught and tested. Chapter 5 and 6 present results of empirical research and data. The project FEI looks at views articulated at the workplace. Finally, the ALTE booklet on language and migration provides recent information on legal requirements for entry, residence and citizenship in a wider European perspective. (Verlag, adapt). |
