AbstractThe Columbus Laboratory of the International Space Station (ISS) is equipped with four cameras to observe the earth in three different perspectives nearly continuously since 2014. This project is conducted by the NASA mission "High Definition Earth Viewing" (HDEV) and the European partner project is "Columbus Eye - Live-Imagery from the ISS in School Lessons" with the follow-up project "KEPLER ISS". The idea of Columbus Eye and KEPLER ISS is to foster methodological competences of pupils in secondary school, to promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) curricular topics and to stimulate the pupils' curiosity by using new media. Moreover, the project develops class-adjusted interactive teaching materials for the purpose of integrating the unique observation footage taken by the cameras of HDEV. This paper shows how HDEV videos can be applied in school materials and how teachers can be introduced to it. Moreover, there is a detailed focus on the didactical and technical paradigm of the materials. The modular structure of the materials allows teachers to use different small learning units in combination with HDEV videos to emphasize on several curricular topics. Even smartphone apps can be included in learning units like this. This is exemplified by our new augmented reality (AR) app "Aralkum - A Lake Disappears", which teaches the pupils about unsustainable agriculture and its effect on our environment. This AR app can be used as an add-on for the worksheet "Deserts of the world" or can be used as a stand-alone school material. It is our second AR app using ISS video footage, and the first to combine it with a Landsat time series. Additionally, based on teacher and student feedback from our first app, we increased levels of social and technical interactivity in the new app. (Orig.).
