Abstract | Media is increasingly gaining significance in today's society in general, and this phenomenon can also clearly be observed in the language learning classroom. Films in particular, have continually come to play a more prevalent role in young children's lives, especially in the home environment, as well as within the learning context in the school setting. For this reason, film is being employed as a medium to promote learning in a variety of subjects, and foreign language learning is also clearly influenced by this development. Therefore, the rising number of English films for children is also of great interest in the context of early foreign language learning in primary school. The majority of the English films, which are designed for young children are usually based on storybook classics, as in the case of "The Gruffalo", a well-known award-winning international bestseller written by Julia Donaldson (1999). The following chapter will present a range of practical examples of how working with the film can provide opportunities for the development of different competencies. Furthermore, it will also discuss in detail to what extent the film can be employed as a valuable resource for foreign language teaching purpose. (Verlag, adapt.). |
